Lighting Design

In skilled hands, lighting enhances, sculpts and inspires. It can also influence well being. Lighting at LRM Electrics brings together art, science and technology. Our team of designers create expressive, sustainable concepts in light. We understand the interplay of structural form and lighting, and work with architects and artists to provide original conceptual designs. Our technical knowledge ensures that concepts become viable solutions. We also know how lighting affects people at work at home, at school and at play. This equips us to shape solutions that are as positive for people as they are sustainable for the environment and for businesses.

LRM Electrics helps clients think about lighting strategically – whether their goal is to use the visual and emotional impact of light to strengthen brand experiences or to lower carbon emissions and save on energy bills. We bring excellence to the design of the most challenging lighting schemes. Natural light can enhance architecture, improve the way people feel and reduce our reliance on electricity.

Our team brings together the best in creative and scientific thinking. Our analysis of the effects of natural light is precise, while our design ability sees us working closely with architects In museums and galleries, our skill in using daylight theatrically comes to the fore. Our celebrated lighting designs show how sophisticated manipulation of natural light can create drama without sacrificing the sensitivity required in lighting valuable exhibits.

Emergency Lighting

The risk assessment to determine the emergency lighting requirement is determined in collaboration with a Responsible Person at the premises and our designers.

The Responsible Person is usually the employer, manager, owner or occupier of the premises. We possess the necessary knowledge, training experience and abilities to make proper assessment of buildings for emergency lightings in collaboration with the responsible person or their representative.

The risk assessment is a multi-stage process, which guides the Responsible or Competent Person from identifying the risks and the need for emergency lighting precautions within the premises, to reducing those risks down to acceptable levels.

It is through reducing these risks that the need for emergency lighting is established.

Emergency Lighting; The Legal Requirements

The main reason for installing an emergency lighting system is to enable the building to meet fire safety legislation in a way that is visually acceptable and meets the user’s needs for ease of operation and maintenance.

Consequently it is important to establish all the relevant legal requirements for emergency lighting systems before commencing the design these are usually agreed between, the user or a responsible person representing the user, our design team the fire authority, and the building control officer.

Emergency Lighting; The Design Objective

BS 5266, when referring to the provision of Escape Lighting in section 4.2, requires that when the supply to all or part of the normal lighting in occupied premises fails, escape lighting is required to fulfil the following function:

To indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape routes.

To provide illumination along such routes to allow safe movement towards and through the exits provided.

To ensure that fire alarm call points and fire fighting equipment provided along escape routes can be readily located.

To permit operations concerned with safety measures. BS 5266-1 recommends that discussions be held prior to commencing the design, to establish the areas to be covered, the method of operation, the testing regime, and the most suitable type of system. These discussions should include the owner or occupier of the premises, the system designer, the installer, the supplier of the equipment, and the fire authority. Note: BS5266 was revised in 2004 following the publication of EN50172. For up to date information visit the British Standards Institute website, at www.bsi-global.com

Energy Saving

The best contribution we can make towards an ecologically sustainable society is to design and install energy efficient light fittings. To run an efficient business we have the same challenges as our customers to reduce our energy usage and operate within a framework that examines the life and environmental impact of the materials we use day to day to design and install lights. This is why we continue to develop ways to implement our commitments to ensure lower energy output for our customers. We can offer our clients expertise in light fittings, lamps and controls, in order to ensure that they can make the energy savings that we have enjoyed.

Customers can take full advantage of the investments we have made to design and install highly efficient fittings that deliver more light and are more durable through their operational life. Energy efficient solutions create better environments for both customers and staff, with less cooling loads for air conditioning.

The Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme promotes good practice for lighting by specifying the choice of the most efficient lamp sources and control gear and giving it an approved coding of efficiency if it is used in a light fitting of specified efficiency. Achieving compliance by choosing the most efficient lamp and fitting entitles the customer to obtain 100% capital relief in the first year of the purchase of the equipment
